Prevention of ACL Injuries

I read an interesting article by Mike Boyle a strength and conditioning coach out of Boston, MA. He was talking about all the hype/ marketing regarding ACL prevention programs especially in the female athlete. His thoughts were that an ACL prevention program is nothing more than a good training program. He highlighted 5 areas that need emphasis in a good program.
1. Active Warm-up - a good active/ movement warm-up instead of the old circle static stretching.
2. Power and Stability / Eccentric Strength=landing skills - a lot of our athletes especially females were not coached how to land, or lack the control to land properly.
3.Strength Development- (emphasis on 1 Leg)
4. Change of Direction Concepts- learning how to stop
5.Change of Direction Conditioning- developing conditioning.

These are the pillars to any good training program dealing with the prevention of injuries. When thinking about your training regimen including components of these pillars will hopefully keep you or your athlete out of our office.
